Q: Are silver poodles silver at birth?

A: The vast majority of silver poodles are born jet-black. Occassionally, a pup will be "born-silver", silver at birth.

Q: How do you know if a pup will be silver or black?

A: Silver poodles usually have a few silver hairs between the pads of their feet, and sometimes you will notice tiny silver hairs at the ends of their noses. By the time they are 6-6 weeks, you will be able to notice that their coats have silver/grey
roots where the coat has begun to grow out.

If you look at the picture above of the pups in the basket, you can sean obvious difference between the black pup in the middle and the silvers on eash side of him.

Q: How long will it take my puppy to turn silver?

A: Most pups start to "silver-out" at about 10-14 weeks old. But you won't see a completely silver coat until the pup is 1-2 years old. Even then your pup may still have dark silver, nearly black ear and tail fur. Notice that Silly still has very dark ears even as an "older girl". This is perfectly acceptable both in pets and show-quality pups.

Q: Can I do anything to make my pup's coat grow out faster?

A: The long, soft wavy fur your pup had as a baby will start to grow out, to be replaced by her adult coat. The adult coat will be curlier and slightly more coarse than her soft puppy fur. It is this coat , the adult coat, that will be silver. So everytime your pup is groomed and has her coat trimmed, she is a little closer to a full adult coat.

You can speed up the appearance of her silver coat by more frequent trimming.
Some people like to clip the coat very short, completely eliminating the puppy coat and thereby exposing the beginnings of the adult silver coat.
